Vecta Labs: Global Mobile Trends in 2023

Have you ever stopped to consider how many hours every day you spend on your mobile device (i.e. smartphone, tablet etc)?

The Vecta Labs team has done a little digging, and we wanted to share a bit of a breakdown as to where in the world smartphones are being used the most frequently – check out some smartphone stats below, based on region:

Globally – According to a fact checked article from Zippia, in 2023, there are roughly 6.92 billion smartphone users across the world, which equates to 86.29% of the global population!

  1. USA – In the USA, 270-million people own a smartphone, so 81.6% of the population. The average American spends 5 hours and 24 minutes on their smartphone every day, and they check their phones 96 times every day!
  2. Australia – Aussies are notorious smartphone users, and on average, in the land down under people spend just shy of 5 hours every day (4 hours and 54 minutes according to RedSearch data) on their phones.
  3. UK – In 2023, Exploding Topics research rank the UK at number 38 globally when it comes to using their smartphones, with an average time of 2 hours and 41 minutes spent on their mobile devices per day, which is a bit of a dip from the average 4 hours per day Brits spent on their smartphones in 2021.
  4. China – In China, the Covid pandemic triggered increased time spent on mobile devices, and in 2023, Statista reports that trend seems to be continuing, with reports that in Q1 2023, Chinese mobile users spent an average of 5.4 hours daily on apps, which remains higher than the average pre-pandemic level. Another very interesting stat around mobile phone use in China to come out in 2023, comes from DataRePortal, which report that in February 2023, there were a total of 1.69 billion cellular mobile connections are active in China, which equates to 118.6 percent of the total population.
  5. Japan – Mobile phone usage is ultra-high in Japan! In fact, according to DataRePortal, in early 2023, A total of 184.4 million cellular mobile connections were active in Japan, which is equivalent to 149.1 percent of the total population. However, Exploding Topics ranks Japan at number 47 globally when it comes to time spent on mobile devices every day, with an average user spending less than 2 hours on their device (1 hour and 47 minutes is the reported average) in 2023.
  6. New Zealand – And, right down at the bottom of the world in New Zealand, there are a total 6.54 million active mobile connections in early 2023, which equals 125.6 percent of the total population. Our Kiwi friends rank at number 30 globally, when it comes to time spent on mobile devices, with Exploding Topics reporting they spend just under 3 hours (2 hours and 59 minutes) on their phones per day.
  7. South Africa – South Africa ranks number one in Africa for mobile phone usage, with Exploding Topics ranking South Africa as number 4 when it comes to global smartphone use in 2023, reporting an average of 5 hours and 9 minutes spent on mobile devices every day. After South Africa, Nigeria is number two in Africa, with Nigerian mobile phone users spending 5 hours and 4 minutes per day.
  8. Philippines – Number one globally for time spent on Smartphones every day (according to Exploding Topics), Filipinos spend just shy of 6 hours every day on their smart devices (5 hours and 47 minutes). 6 hours equates to 37.5% of the average length of time people are awake during the day (16 hours).

Globally, smartphone use is continuing to grow or explode, depending on the media outlets you read, and we, at Vecta Labs recognise there is so much opportunity for network providers and the telecoms industry to continue improving, capitalising, and engaging with these growth trends.
